Mark,

The outdoor FF guys use 50 foot fiberglass electrician's poles. They are very expensive ($500) but are heavy duty and long lasting.

Another option that works is a bow and arrow with line attached.

A telescoping steering pole would likely be too fragile and "whippy" for your application. However I know of a source for carbon poles up to 11M for about $200.
