An ill-conceived rules change is an ill-conceived rule change, regardless of who it primarily affects. It potentially affects everyone covered by the rule. It's stated goal is not defendable, in my opinion.

Perhaps I should use the term youths. I know the AMA distinguishes different age categories, but I always refer to anyone 18 or under as a junior for the sake simplicity. So yes, juniors and seniors.

I hadn't considered gliders, but it sounds like you need to do some work on your unlimited glider :)

Actually it's Juniors and Seniors in many model classes and catapult gliders in all age classes. When I started flying gliders the Cat 1 and Cat 2 Open records were held by one set of flights with a standard class glider. And of course the current Cat 1 Open records in both classes are held by one set of flights with a standard class glider. At this point in time my standard class Cat 2 glider outperforms my unlimited glider.

Not only juniors, just primarily juniors. Most Open records are not obtainable without a model specifically built for the rules, so at least in indoor it would be extremely rare to break 2 records with one flight. This is much more common with juniors. I broke both the LPP and PP records in a couple categories when I was a junior, and I know others have done the same.

Why do you say this proposal only affects junior class fliers?

It looks like he simply added the words "and a possible national record as well" without fixing the rest of the proposal. His examples are already specifically disallowed by section 10 of the outdoor free flight rule book, and his proposed revision has no affect on contest results anyways. This means he doesn't understand the revision he's proposed, he doesn't know the outdoor free flight rules, or he's worded the proposal in an intentionally deceiving way.

In any case we should be pointing this out to all the other contest board members and voting against this proposal. We should also emphasize that this will generally only affect junior age fliers, and it seems unwise to pass rules that could potentially discourage them from competing.

General proposal GEN19-01 is back up on the AMA website. This is the one that requires separate flights to set records in more than one event...... It affects all types of aeromodeling where records are kept. Here's the note from Tony Stillman:

Dear Contest Board members:
This proposal would modify the National Records section of the General Section Competition Regulations. As such, only contest boards that have record activity as part of their competitions would be involved in voting on this proposal.

This is a basic proposal, so it will follow the normal procedure for such.
