That all sounds reasonable to me.
As someone who greatly enjoys building just about anything, I can't
imagine any joy in competing with a model I haven't created.
In my bystander's mind, F1D is the peak of the pyramid and has always
represented the total achievement of being able to build and fly - if
not design, build and fly - a model that will best all challengers. I
honestly can't see any point if you only contest part of that
equation.
I can sort of justify it (but only just) with the outdoor FAI events
as you are adding back in picking the air. Even there though, I would
have issues, were I competitively flying.
