I believe innovator extraordinaire Bernard Hunt came up with this "why didn't I think of that" arrangement, along with the ahead-of-its-time unbraced F1D wings, back in the 65cm days. At least, he's the first person I saw with them.

While the rest of us were lugging around large F1D model boxes, he showed up at USIC with a small carry-on box holding something like 6 models. And won.
