I've found that wicking in the adhesive solution is relatively heavy. A lighter way is to brush the adhesive solution on the frame, and then use pure solvent to reactivate it on the film.
It works exactly the same way as your method (the solvent drops pull the film down nicely, and don't warp the outline like water would), but I suspect that there is less adhesive residue on the film.
