Don,

I don't know what level of relevance this provides, but there was a discussion about preassembled parts for outdoor models or something of that nature about 5 (probably closer to 10) years ago (hopefully Don DeLoach can weigh in on this with a better memory than mine). It was specifically for AMA competition, so there again, not necessarily relevant.

One of the major problems at hand is that BOM as originally envisioned never anticipated the proliferation of DIY equipment and the like, and certainly not the level of factory quality machining equipment that would come into play even as early as the 1970s. A look at the machining involved in the gas models in AMA's old "Adrift on the Air" really serves as an eye opener to the gap that existed between those who had access to that equipment and those who didn't. Indoor has remained insulated from that situation to at least a reasonable extend for quite some time, but that insulation seems to be fading.

I'm partly fearful of what will happen when BOM is lifted from indoor, but it probably won't make any major changes, just as it has had zero effect in AMA outdoor flying.
