It sounds like you're using too heavy balsa, too thick, and probably C grain on top of it. You can make excellent props from C grain, but it needs to be light and thin. Try ordering some contest grade 1/32 from SIG and see if that works out a little better for you.
Also, you should really try to make it up to the Kent contest at the end of the month where you can learn more live and in person from the experts:
