I am hoping to get some of our middle school and high school Science
Olympiad students to practice indoor freeflight over the Summer. We use a
local church gym here in Centerville, Ohio (suburb of Dayton). We would
like to move past Wright Stuff planes. I'm not sure we can get to F1D, but
the other classes might be accessible. I think the next step for us is to
build our own props. Currently, we use Ikara props which are okay for
Science Olympiad, but they can only be 14cm in diameter for SO rules.
Unfortunately, every prop I have tried to make has ended in failure. I
have trouble bending the balsa wood. It always breaks no matter how long I
soak it.

Our problem is that we don't a mentor to help us and teach us how to do the
basic stuff like bending balsa and making props. We build decent planes
(at least for SO rules), but to move beyond SO, we are kind of stuck.

I like the idea of making some kind of local freeflight club. That could
be an avenue to encourage local youngsters (and older folks like myself) to
get involved. There are plenty of RC groups and drone groups, but no
freeflight groups around the Dayton area as far as I know.
