Re: FAI unique ID numbers for the 2018 Indoor World Championship

Would the FAI number rule be one of those rules that could be addressed by the CD for a given contest? Basically waive that requirement for anything other than international (world championship) competition?

I for one am not love in with the idea of having to essentially buy an FAI number to write on the stick of my F1L to fly at Kent and West Baden.

If this is a rule that local CD’s can enforce or not at their discretion, assuming enforcement or the waiving thereof is mentioned in the contest literature, then I see this not really being an issue. If on the other hand this is a “must enforce at ALL contests” type of thing, I see it being potentially more damaging to indoor participation than the “cheating” it is supposed to prevent.

My thoughts, for what they worth.

So I would recommend AMA contests don't required this ID or an FAI license and you can set an AMA National Record in an event which is flying by the FAI rules(except ID requirement). I looked and did not find in the AMA rules that it requires you to have an FAI license to set an AMA National record but maybe I missed it.

I fear this new rule will reduce participation in the USA as it is an additional fee simply to fly at any AMA sanctioned contest that was not required before. Most people who fly F1L, F1M, or F1R do not have a FAI license, especially the sport fliers. Not sure if we should modify the AMA Indoor rules or not. I can see requiring it if you want to set a FAI record or compete in the World Champs but for a local contest or even at the Nats, I do not see why a person needs to buy it just to write some numbers on the side of the plane.

This addition to the FAI rules by default means for all USA indoor flyers that fly F1D, F1L, F1M, and F1R they will need a FAI ID number for their models since the ID rule is added to each of these classes as a "characteristic" along with specs such as wingspan, min weight etc.

The FAI/CIAM instituted an off cycle rules change that took effect on January 1, 2018. That rule change added the following to section 3.4.2 ofthe F1D rules (actually to the rules for all FAI indoor free flight classes):
