I use Bestine for those reasons. The company makes natural rubber cement and thinner (Bestine).
Whatever it is in there doesn't bother me, doesn't smell bad, and doesn't make my family complain.
All of which are good things. Plus it is still pretty sticky.

I think the glue stick method was for adhering condenser paper. Now that you can use OS film, you should go that route. glue stick would work well on tissue, but I doubt it would work well on mylar films.

One 3m77 solvent is Rosignol, which IIRC, doesn't smell terrible. Haven't tried that yet though.
