Bill,
I think that SO as an AMA event is an outstanding idea and I will promote it to the fullest amongst my SO students. As you know, I coach four local high schools and typically have 10-12 students build 10-12 Wright Stuff airplanes. The Pontiac, Michigan contest is very convenient to my school districts and I try to get students to attend every year. I have only had success getting students to fly AMA once a couple of years ago with two students building your Cat II record holder std CLG. They had a blast!
As the students would already have airplanes built for this new AMA class, the potential for participation would be pretty high, in my opinion and based upon my experience having these discussions with many students. I tried to get students to modify Wright Stuff airplanes last year to fly them as F1M's and I couldn't get any of them interested. It would only have taken about an hour to trim 2 cm off of the wings and cut the 16" motor stick a little shorter (to cut weight and match the 1.5g motor better) and they would have had four minute plus F1M's.
