I do not yet use CGWinder, but have bought the chain and sprockets and
plan to built one once I have the spare time. I do not use any of the 3
methods, but #4 instead. I have my own counter with 2 line display, and
for the winder (at the moment K&P) have added two reed switches. These
are installed at "90 degrees phase shift", meaning that they toggle
state "on" and "off" at different phases of the rotation, but for one
turn of the output shaft at some point both are either on or off, but
also for some part either one is off. This enables me to determine the
direction of the rotation.
Thus my counter uses the two rows so that one shows the turns wound
forward, and the other turns backed off. I have a push button to reset
the counters, first push resets the backoff counter, and the other push
(provided that the backoff counter is at zero) resets the forward
counter. So my procedure to fly is as follows:
- reset counters
- wind the motor
- backoff. At this phase the winder shows both turns wound and turns
backed off.
- go fly.
- reset the backoff counter (remember the number of turns backed off).
Unwind the motor.
- record the turns, backoff (from memory) and the turn remaining.
In the picture the winder seems larger than it is. Actually the size is
2*5*5cm (4/5" * 2" * 2")
