I suspect that this is entirely due to fact that many (most?) of us have little to no experience in doing fund raising.
Heck, I wasn't sure that the Rantoul effort would work out when I tried it and it actually was fairly easy in the end. A lot of work, yes, but not terrible and not all at once.
I'm sure an awful lot of us would dread calling up, say, Boeing and asking for money for what is our hobby.
You need to find the right person inside:

and you need the right person within the hobby. AMA or NFFS might be the first place to start.
Or you find another hobbyist (like Tony Italiano) who takes it upon him (or her)self to start being that person.
Another source to tap might be the Maker movement for both publicity, new recruits to the hobby and support.
