Nick, Joshua and Don,

Thank you or your replies. I am sorry that I have offended you with a piece of geriatric stupidity. There has been much talk on this side of the pond about F1M and some talk about possible alterations for beginners. I am interested in F1M but apparently I can’t tell my RRs from my MMs and thought; ‘ah, these will be suggested changes’. Naturally I was surprised and sent that blundering email to prove it! Actually I agree with you that short rules have stood the test of time. In general a size limit, in the form of area or weight and an energy limit by engine size or towline length or weight of rubber is about all that is needed.

However, although I confess to my own ineptitude, I still maintain that the rules are poorly written. There is an inconsistency of presentation throughout. Just compare the rule about flexing airframes for F1L and that for several other classes. There are regular pieces of tautology such as: ‘the maximum weight of the motor shall not exceed 1.5g.’.

It is not clumsy it is brilliant. Not all events needs to be laden with multiple restrictions and 35cm has been flown by these simple rules for many years. It is one of the few indoor events left that allow complete creativity to the builder as they only have to satisfy the monoplane and wingspan rules. I personally am much more interested in flying F1R than the current restrictive rules used in F1D and F1M.

Mike,

Thanks for the quick reference to the correct FAI page. I am surprised at the clumsy wording and that the only requirements are a monoplane with a maximum span of 350mm. No stipulations as to airframe weight or rubber weight. I would expect this to raise some eyebrows.
