On the two-battery cauteries that I have used, there is a long brass strip that connects the rear of the second battery to the tip wire. I removed it, bent it to go between the batteries and cut off the excess. It connects the first battery. The second battery isn't connected to anything, but stands ready to be swapped with the first one when it wears out.
