Mike, it was the cautery that started the fire. Now, with the blank in place, it's running on 1.2 volts and doesn't get hot enough to do anything except cut film. The element doesn't glow at all. I figured that if I needed more heat I could switch from the NiMH to an alkaline, but it seems okay the way it is.
OlBill uses a 15 w iron, which works better than the cautery on 2 cells but I can't control it well holding it 4 inches from the tip. The cautery is an unnecessarily big bulky thing, but my trigger finger is less than 2 inches back from the tip and I can control it, especially at its new lower heat.
Anyway, the BV-141 kit just got here and I have to concentrate on that for awhile.
