Nick,

 The main point is that the model flying at 1.6 g requires less power for level flight than the 1.8 g model. The difference is in fact
 

 1 - (1.6/1.8)^(1.5)
 

 or just under 17%. This is why it would be possible to use a bigger prop to climb at the same time using a thinner motor.
