I still do not have any first hand experience, but reading though the
previous messages I got the impression that around 1000 lumens might be
a decent amount of light. I got to try a headlamp with Cree XM-L T6 led
light, that is sometimes claimed to have up to 1800 lumens, while in
practice the real applications are less than 1000. The headlamp I tried
was said to be (by the owner) about 900. I could see the beam across the
yard and road to the neighbors treetops. I then got me a small handheld
lamp with similar led, but this gave a little less light, I suppose 700
to 800 lumens. Probably not enough for the mine, but made a really nice
bike headlight. My previous one was real dim compared to this new one.

So over to look the availability and reviews. There seems to be a range
of lamps using several T6 leds to light, and reading a decent review on
one of these I decided to give that a try. DX is selling similar lamp,
but I got mine from another chinese seller via Ebay. The lamp looks like
attached. Received it yesterday. The review claims that it has around
2000 lumens of power, and compared to the single T6, the light is much
more. Shining again the neighbors treetops, the beam if the old lamp was
seen (even as there is plenty of reflection from the streetlights, as
there is now snow on the ground), but the new lamp really lighted the
tree! Looks like this one might give enough power. The lamp is powered
by 4 pieces of 18650 Li-Ion cell (parallel) so it is quite portable,
even on airplane.
