I have a feeling that Art Holzman(sp) tackled this problem some years ago and said what he did on Hip Pocket. As I remember he slit the wood along the grain direction so that it could 'fan' out when placed on the former and I think he used two laminae so that the 'fan feathers' in one piece overlapped the slots in the other.

I hope Art replies because my memory ain't so hot!
