The BMFA BOM rule got out of hand when people started trying to include exactly what you could use in terms of specific components such as fuselage booms, carbon 'D' boxes, propeller assemblies and so on. You soon run out of space to list all the options! Does the following offer a sensible starting point? The object is very simple, that all builders can start with similar materials and then handcraft these to make a model. Obviously the Guidelines need extension and improvement but I think the principle is what is in all our hearts.

BOM Rule Proposal

The competitor must construct his own model. Because it is virtually impossible to define every aspect of construction the competitor is on trust to adhere to this rule. If another competitor in the same competition protests that the rule has not been respected then the CD will decide (with the usual right of appeal to an FAI jury) whether the model may be used. The following are guidelines to assist in adhering to this rule:

1.Materials shall be generally available from at least one supplier.

2.Materials shall be bought in the normal formats; for example, metal as wire, thin sheet, and tube, carbon as rod, sheet, and filaments, wood as block, sheet and strip.

3Materials may be fashioned with hand tools; for example, knives, drills, files, pliers

3 Materials may not be fashioned with machine tools, moulding devices and such other equipment as would not normally be available to the average indoor builder.
