Hi John,

When I got my C.D. license, I enquired about that point, as Mark
Bennett was coming up on his F1D attempt and I needed to know if
people actually adhere to the rule in practice. The reason was never
positively stated to me but I got the impression that Record Trials
required two AMA timers plus the C.D. (and the flyer) which would put
at least four people in the hall and supposedly help limit
"problems". Outdoor contests have a lot of people around which would
tend to limit any strange things. Apparently, in the past, before
that rule was established, there had been an occasional doubtful time
turned in for records.
A good example of why having more people present is good idea, is
Steve Brown's unofficial all-time flight of 1:03:54. With the number
of observers (and who they were) present nobody questions that flight
and everyone knows what to shoot for. Why it is not a record is
another story.
