While there is room for two timers to sign the first page of the record application, there is no space allotted for AMA numbers. On the second page,, under a smaller-type sentance: "For Indoor Record Trials, the signatures of two (2) timers are required." The boxes are given for timers signatures, printed names and AMA numbers are given. This second area, to me, clearly deliniates the differences between record trials and AMA contests. Only one timer is needed at an AMA contest and he doesn't need to be an AMA member.

The additional requirements for record trials were developed to reduce the questionable ethics of a flier and his buddy trying to set recrods with no one else in attendance.

If I recall correctly, the record trial forms require the timers to sign & provide their AMA numbers. I could be wrong about this. I have never seen the forms that are used for submitting a record set at a contest, but if they require the timer to sign & provide his/her AMA number that could the deal breaker for a contest record, it the timer was not an AMA member.

The form also implies 2 timers, but the rules only specify 2 timers for a record set at a record trial, which implies that the other time you can set a record, during a contest, does not have that requirement. Hmmm.
