Re: Getting newcomers started in indoor FF
Thanks Norm. Well, I had a friend outside of FF, that took me to Lost Hills when I was about 30; There was the comaraderie of that camping and getting away from it all feeling and the relaxing simplicity of flying without having to control [crash] things that really got me away from the whole Silicon Valley grind of the 90's. I came back to it after a long hiatus for the same reason; its just good for the soul. There's also the the simple fact that I lost my very first HLG to a thermal on my first day flying, which instead of being a dissapointment, was magic and inspiring.
As for indoor, I think the original kernal happened during that same period, when I got to go to an event in the Moffet field hangar (before they shut it all down) The mere space itself is inspiring, before you even get to the incredulous sight of an F1D floating around for what seemed like an impossible length of time. More recently, I owe a lot to the folks who took the time to encourage and show me an A-6. Finally, I just like the building of indoor planes - the pleasure of sitting at your workbench with a hot cup of coffee, a bunch of balsa, and building something that's beautiful, does something wonderful, and --can't be bought in a store for any price.--
