Let's assume the obvious--that one guy's perception of "honest perception" can be recast as a "personal attack" by someone else.
And vice versa. One way to sort it out, in this case, may be to insist on specific evidence about the accusations causing offense.

Since you refer to your 25 years of contest experience, no doubt you know exactly who these appeasers are, and how they appease. I infer you also know who the old farts are, and the relevant situations in which they receive appeasing, thus leading to the dwindling of indoor. No space limit here, please write an article if you wish, with specifics.
