Don't know about foolproof, but I struggled mightily with pigtail bearings until I read the suggestion about putting the straight forming wire onto a frame and make sure its at high tension. Until then, my jig wire would bend as much as my pigtail wire and it was all a mess. I use a jeweler's jigsaw now for the straight wire, tension it is much as the jigsaw frame will stand, and bend pigtails with relatively little trouble. The straight wire doesn't move at all.

Still takes adjusting and tweaking after, but MUCH less.
