I don't agree that individual superior motors can't be found by testing. Before USIC 2007 I did extensive motor testing for F1M and found two 3/02 motors that were clearly superior to any of my 5/99 motors. One of these did a site record 20:00 at USIC and the other did 21:49 for the world record a month later. Maybe this was just luck but I'm happy with the result.

I also don't agree that all 5/99 or any other batch is pretty much the same. It's a well known fact that the rubber you get in a box (especially a 10# box) might be several different strips spliced together and that the different sections can have different properties. I bought 2# of 2/99 a few years ago that had two splices. One of the three sections was clearly better than the other two. Beyond that, I also believe that there can also be different properties within a section due to any number of variables during the manufacturing process.

If nothing else, testing motors will help you learn to wind better - and that's a major part of this sport.
