Well folks, I just received my latest new steering pole. After seeing
the ones used in Colorado Springs I decided that my take apart pole was
too much trouble to use. I bought a telescopic carbon pole from Alla
Dyatlov (allany10 on eBay). The pole is advertised to be 12 meters but
it seems the practical extended length is more like 33' - still long
enough for my purposes. It collapses to a liile under 33" which should
make travel a lot easier. Weight is 24 ounces. The agreed on price was
$130 including shipping which is a lot less than I paid for my last
pole. I've asked if more are available. If they are I'll post more info
  on the list.

For anyone thinking of buying a carbon pole, be prepared for the worst
when using them. They are not very durable. My take apart pole had a
damaged section when I received it, it was stepped on the first time I
took it flying, it broke again in Colorado while I was trying to steer
my LPP (causing me to mess up my best flight) and another section was
broken this past weekend. I don't think I can refuse when people want
to borrow it, but like every other pole I've owned it often comes back
  in less than perfect condition.
