The blade holder is helpful because it assures a square cut. It's 
useful with wood up to about .062 thick. I'd remove the setscrews from 
the straightedge to avoid any danger of damaging the wood or 
accidentally getting any rocking of the straightedge. 
You can cut spars without the blade holder - especially if the cutting 
mat is in place (or a fresh mat is installed). I know of several 
modelers who used the Harlan cutter without the blade holder. With a 
little practice you should get a feel for it. You can also cut ribs by 
setting the rib template against the straightedge and using the 
micrometers to regulate the cut after first making one truing cut with 
the usual broken razor blade.
