Not true! It tends to work itself deeper into the skin if allowed.
If ignored, and you're lucky, it will "work itself out" somewhere
else, not too far from where it entered. Fortunately, a splinter
usually stings enough to know when you have a splinter, and can take
action to remove. The trick there it to get a correct grip on the
end without breaking it, because it is brittle, and can break off
leaving a piece deeper in skin. Then you have to tear away some
outer skin to get at it. At this point, bloody tissue can obscure
finding the end of boron to grab again. (This is not based on
reading, but upon having had many boron splinters.)

Agreed there. It won't kill you, or travel to vital organs. (Heh,
heh, so far, at least.)
