One must purchase a NIkon golf rangefinder with an "i" in the model. However, the 20i will not display the vertical height. The Coolshot AS (an exception to the "I" ), 40i, 80iVR, and the Pro Stabilized are the only Nikon golf rangefinders that display the vertical height. The Forestry Pro model also does so. The Coolshot AS and 40i work well. I do not recommend the 80iVR. I have one and it has problems, so I use a Coolshot AS. Al of the Nikon's I have used read the return signal from film covered models.
There is a new 20iGII but the manual is not available. Since the 20iGII is a development of the 20i, I suspect it does not display height.
The problem with the 80iVR (and probably the Pro stabilized) is that it does not have a manual mode switch between near and far target priority. My 80iVR usually measures the far wall or ceiling when the model is closer than 15m as the algorithm does not work well for near target priority at closer distances. I purchased the 80iVR as I hoped the image stabilization would help me better track a model high up (unsteady hands and eyes) but that has not worked out that well and the lack of near measurements is not offset by any help when the model is far away.
Unfortunately, only the Pro Stabilized is a current model for golf rangefinders. I have not used a Pro Stabilized but i suspect it has the same problems for our use as the 80iVR. One can find an AS or 40i, that is what one should currently purchase. Or, one can purchase a Forestry Pro.
