James, The surfactant was added to the water that the microfilm is poured on, not to the microfilm solution. My thought was by reducing the surface tension of the water the film solution would spread more easily before it would start to dry allowing a more uniform sheet. Thought also reduced surface tension between film and water might aid lifting the sheet off the water and better drainage of water off the sheet once lifted.

I've never done microfilm but am unsurprised that it seems to help. Probably other dishwashing or other detergents would also work but might offer little advantage. Dawn, Joy, and similar products were used to clean up oil-soaked waterfowl; but "surfactants" were used on some oil spills. The name used made a large difference in acceptability.
A common place to pour microfilm once was a bathtub. Maybe you are the first person to knowingly and intentionally add a surfactant and reduce the variability. <Grin and Congratulations>

Has anyone experimented with adding surfactants to the water when pouring film. About half way thru my pour today I added one drop of Jet Dry Rinse Aid. (Dishwasher rinse aid) to my tank. One drop to 9 gallons of water. I am convinced it made a noticeable difference in color consistency of sheets.
