Flying into Spokane is the way to go. The drive to Moscow is pleasant, no traffic.

 The model box handling depends on the airline. If it's Southwest they use 737's and the normal Boeing overhead bins are available, although it's the wild west when it comes to finding room on their overloaded planes.
 

  If it's Alaska you'll probably transfer to a smaller prop-driven Horizon commuter plane in Seattle or Portland and then fly to Spokane. The overhead bin space on those airplanes is much too small for the average model box. You might be able to negotiate with the cabin crew but more likely they will take the box and load it into the cargo hold after all the other luggage is in. They give the box back to you on the the ramp in Spokane. I've had that happen many times without a problem. I wouldn't do it with a flimsy foam core box though...
