One thing to do is to notice it as soon as it happens and dislodge the rubber from the roller. If a couple of inches hangs down, the rubber tends to release itself from the roller. You may need to hold the stripper in a horizontal position until a longer end hangs down. Then it will resist clinging to the roller.
 

 Or, cut the rubber under water. :)
