The May Rantoul contest is now over and I must say that it was my most enjoyable time yet at Rantoul. In the past, I have always worried about hanging up on the ceiling lights and the possible air currents (hanging on the walls) which made longer flights quite stressful for me. This time, the hanging lights in the middle of the flying area were removed (thanks to Mike Kirda and Al Stone who did most of the heavy lifting on that project). This, in conjunction with the general long term air leak sealing project (again, thanks to MIke Kirda) made for much less stress when flying near the ceiling,

I was able to fly my F1D just at the ceiling (one flight only skimming the girders and water pipes with the prop) many times with little concern about hanging and drifting into the walls. In fact, all of the full motor F1D flights landed pretty much where they were launched (they drifted one way at the ceiling and then back the other way on descent as is expected with a convection current caused drift rather than an air leak or outside wind caused drift). Note that it was very windy outside this past weekend at Rantoul.

I have not looked forward to the Rantoul flying in the past. Now, I think the Rantoul contest will be more enjoyable and stress free. Of course some fliers will always push the limits and bounce hard around the ceiling, so Mike was busy retrieving planes with the lift. But, that is fun for some people.
