A Call to Action for Indoor Free Flight Competitors
Last October, Andras Ree, an FAI CIAM bureau member, mentioned the proposed rule change for marking indoor model in this forum. One concern was that the marking ID was to be the FAI unique ID number. For some time now, the FAI (and many national clubs) have required ID markings on outdoor free flight model. However, the FIA allows outdoor free flight models to be marked with either the FAI unique ID number or the competitor's national license number (preceded by the three character country code, USA for AMA members). If a competitor has never held a FAI Sporting License, the competitor probably does not have a FAI unique ID number.
The proposed rule change will require markings on all FAI class indoor models. Most indoor FAI classes and models are not flown in international competition so most of the competitors will not have a FAI unique ID number. It has been suggested that the proposal for indoor model ID marking be made similar to that for outdoor free flight models, allowing either the competitor's FAI unique ID number or the national license number to be used for ID marking.
The proposed rule change explanation (for the CIAM meeting in April), specifically states that only the FAI unique option will be allowed, unlike the rule for the out door classes as this is a new rule:
"As a new rule it is appropriate to introduce this specifically for the FAI ID number and not include the licence number alternative allowed under the long established rules for outdoor models."
This limiting of options for the indoor classes will mean, in all likelihood, that many indoor competitors will need to a apply and pay for a FAI Sporting License in order to obtain a FAI unique ID number. Perhaps, if the FAI CIAM would like to standardize the ID marking, an inexpensive or free way should also be provided for indoor competitors to obtain a FAI unique ID number.
I urge all indoor fliers to contact their national club administrators and FAI CIAM delegate asking for this change, to also allow the national license number for marking purposes, to the proposed ID marking rule. When the delegates from the national clubs meet later this month to vote on the rule change, perhaps there will be sufficient support to allow indoor free flight competitors the same options currently allowed outdoor free flight competitors.
