I'm a retired chemist and your question intrigued me. California is indeed a special case. I looked up Klean Strip odorless mineral spirits, the brand of paint thinner at Home Depot., They do make a special type for California (Except for LA and vicinity) Here is the url to the producer, Wm. Barr, product page for this stuff which lists the CA stock numbers. http://wmbarr.com/product.aspx?catid=97&prodid=205 http://wmbarr.com/product.aspx?catid=97&prodid=205. Don't know if it will work, but a quart might be worth a try, if you don't live too close to LA.

The answer on Coleman Camp Fuel is a good one, at least chemically. I once had a project making high octane gas out of similar stuff. Naphtha is just a name for a low octane refinery cut a little more volatile than kerosene.. Components vary, depending on the source.

 Enjoy

 Joe.
