One attaches the blast plate before loading so that the motor stick is protected if the motor breaks when being loaded. Although I have had some motor breakages after loading but before the launch, most of my motor breaks are during loading.
Of course, one needs to remove the shield/plate before launching (do not ask how many times I have forgot to do this) so motor breakages after launch still can cause damage. I have seen many motor breakages just after launch from the top competitors and the planes are usually quite damaged. At this year's US Nats, I had a motor break just after minutes into the flight. Luckily for me there was no damage.
