I think that No-Cals that are not made "to the limits of their capabilities" are a lot more accessible to novice builders. I have built a Dayton Wright Racer according to Mike Welshans' plans and get consistent 80 second flights indoors with minor adjustments for ceiling height. The plane weighs 11 grams without rubber, including a 7 inch Peck prop. There is a kit available from Retro RC. I agree that Phantom Flashes made from the available kits would be great intro planes. Mine can get 80 seconds with a plastic prop and the right rubber in a Category II site.
