That was one of the troubles I think back then. There was the written
rule and the "intent" which was not written which resulted in things
like your model being disqualified. I think now the rules are being
interpreted more exactly as written. I have no issue with a 20" span
stab on a OPP , 8" span stab on a ministick, or with the carbon being
used on LPP as the rules do not prevent it as written. If the intent is
18" stab span then the rules need to be changed to more correctly
reflect the originators "intent". Back then you had to deal with the
"intent" added to the mix and at the USIC you often had the guys who
write or created the event as a CD or at the contest so was hard to
argue against the intent :-) A plane would be legal at one contest and
illegal at another.
