My first reaction to the STEM thing is that a lot of that stuff ends up as
entertainment to lighten the work of the school day. When the impulse comes
from without it tends to have a superficial effect. When the impulse comes
from social interaction like discovering a club and a bunch of people
getting together and having a good time . . . that though they're polite
and willing to accommodate, couldn't really care less about whether you
like it or not . . . will usually have a much more powerful effect in terms
of attracting a new-comer.
My impulse concerning Kibbe and the possibility of sponsorship is simply
that: solving an expense problem.
I have the luck to be old enough to remember thousands of people turning
out for events like the Mirror or Plymouth meets to watch freeflight and
U-Control and make the kids who won contests heroes. Freeflight and
U-Control are still lively and engrossing hobbies for lots of people no
matter how many drones are for sale at Best Buy.
The possibilities for making any pastime that embodies competition widely
attractive and remunerative is always there but to live, they always
require those who express your feeling about the effort: "For most of us,
this is a hobby first and foremost" and for me you and people who think
the way you do come first.
My point here is that it's simpler than one might imagine and there seems
always to be someone who's willing and able to make the effort. And,
there's not all that much effort required.
