Mini-Dome Configuration

John Kagan recently saw the current configuration of the Mini-Dome in
Johnson City, TN. This was a good step since visualizing or describing
the configuration of ceiling obstacles is difficult.

Long ago the Mini-Dome was almost symmetrical North-South and East-West
with football, basketball, and track centered in the dome. Football was
stopped, and the basketball court was moved west closer to the west side
stands. This resulted in our beloved scoreboard, but we and ETSU
somewhat learned how to deal with the scoreboard.

New banners and basketball lighting were installed after our 2012
USIC/Nats. This basketball lighting is not symmetrical East and West.
The west lighting bank is essentially over the track and is between the
scoreboard and the west stands and over the scorekeepers tables so is
less of a problem for flying. The east bank of basketball lights hang
from the main truss beam immediately east of the center louver, thus
dividing the available flying area. If this lighting bank were moved
from the main beam adjacent to the center louver east to the main beam
over the track (with the speakers), the flying space would be much
improved. The east banners are hung from a minor beam one-fourth of the
way from the east basketball lights to the main beam over the track.

Removing banners, flag, and scoreboard would also help a lot.

Now neither football games (first next week) nor basketball games are
played in the dome, but they and other sports practice there.
