My apologies for any confusion. The non-transparent area is independent to the bonus colored markings.
These "markings" are a simple challenges for students yet aid increased visibility for all involved with officiating and spectating. The sites that some states have such University of Illinois (armory), Indiana (Mellencamp Pavillion- possible Cat III), Ohio State and even Kent State are excellent cases in point. There are always new officials running and timing this event as well as a good crowd of spectators all attempting to watch one airplane amongst many. Finally, attempting to locate hung-up airplanes for faster retrieval is welcome as well.
