While you can make heavier props work, the Ikara's aren't that heavy, and you can make a balsa prop to a gram without exotic measures.
So, why would you live with a 2.5 gm prop, instead aim for that 1 to 1.5 gm prop and put more meat into the structure or use less exotic covering. Students have trouble building good motor sticks, I'd put the weight there instead of in the prop. And to avoid the mysticism about good indoor covering I use light store bags when I'm coaching teams. I've found the ones from Home Depot generally work, recently used one from Canadian Tire and another from Quizno's and had no trouble with the SO 8 gm limit. Weight saved on the prop makes that easy.
