Confession, when I'm directly coaching students instead of coaches, I generally start with a lightened Denny Dart. I used to do 'good' SO planes, but they could take 4-6 two hour sessions with risk of losing students.

The Denny Dart can be built in an hour or two, and it can do well over a minute if you get the weight down a little. There's nothing to beat having the student's own plane fly to the ceiling and stay up there to capture the student's interest for the longer, harder (but still fun) effort of building a competitive SO plane.

After that session I'd start the students on a good SO plane.

Like I said in my other note. Most important first step is to get the students in the air. A good plane to SO rules can come after.
