Welcome to the list!

First, do you have experience building indoor models? If not, I'd suggest building a Limited Pennyplane followed by an F1M so that you can get the techniques down prior to jumping into the deep end. You can find the relevant information at indoornewsandviews.com. I'd recommend going to the downloads section and download "The Best of INAV" which has a number of articles including a build tutorial for a pennyplane and the Hobby Shopper EZB article. You need to master the techniques of both of those before starting your first F1D. This does not mean you have to build an EZB, but you can apply the principles from that article to any other indoor model.

Once you've read through those items and made use of the relevant skills to build your pennyplane, read Steve Brown's articles on building propellers, motorsticks, and tailbooms, and then use that information to build your F1M. I'd recommend one of the balsa F1M's rather than Bill Gowen's design only in this scenario since your goal is F1D (If F1M ever strikes your fancy, Bill's is the best one to use).

After that, just lighten up your materials selection, pick an F1D that you like, and build it. Pretty much any of the F1D's posted on the INAV site are a good starting point. A fair number of people select Kagan's Eidolon as their first F1D, and for good reason--it's a successful and forgiving design.
