Thanks, Mike. Your post plus Nick's soon after clarifies the kit cost. Spending $50 to $70 to build such a model is much more palatable. I was trying to understand the kit cost discussion, and couldn't tell how much was material and how much was tools and forms and such. Also, I didn't mean to suggest anyone spent $60k and built 320 F1Ds, I was simply looking at the price per pound, trying to see how expensive the materials are. $60k per pound is more than the price of gold a year or two ago.

While anyone serious about F1D may need to buy a set of the tools and stuff, they clearly don't need a new set for every model. So I agree with the suggestion to sell kits of just the airplane parts, and selling the rest as separate pieces. I think the first time F1D builder would probably need at least two kits: one to learn on, one to complete and fly.
