A kiddie rod will work out just fine- you might need to add weight if you blow it up too much. I'd recommend contacting LeoP and purchasing some of the white 7mm rod as it has less drag and is a bit easier to steer with. I have balloons and valves as does A2Z.

I'd advise getting one that will reach the top of wherever you fly commonly. Stiffer the better.
