There has been work done by Russian modelers flying indoor RC on ultralight
F3P models. Alexey Lantsov had a plane that used and ultra light tube as
the main structural member of his first planes. The description of the

If I recall the carbon was wound on a tube made of something like microlite
which was probably used as a membrane between the mandrel and the carbon
tow and became part of the finished tube. It seems to have added strength
to the finished tube by providing the inside of the tube with a continuous
surface.
