I did not experience what Nick is suggesting, but maybe I wasn't winding correctly. I'd think that if you have 10-15% extra that you could put in a motor, you weren't winding hard enough to begin with.
As always, I recommend that my (and anyone else's) advice with a grain of salt. Don't take it as fact right away, but try it out for yourself and see if it makes sense and/or works for you.
