John

You have drawn up scales similar to those used by Jim Jones but I feel there is more to consider in the construction of a rib slicer. The idea of drawing an oblique lines across a scale to render subdivisions easier to read probably dates back to the middle ages or much earlier and the idea used to be common on the ends of the wooden rules we had when I was a schoolboy, (does anyone still have one?).

It seems to me that at least two pairs of hands would be necessary to apply the basic idea in its simplest form and I think consideration is required for the following: How does one hold the wood being cut, how does one attach the cutting template to the sliding part, does the cutting template require some further support when in the cutting position. I know these may only seem to be trivial concerns (and some solutions may be immediately obvious) but I feel that if they are not addressed then the final tool will not give that pleasure and satisfaction that a good tool does.
